Baseball’s a beautiful game, there’s no getting around that fact. From the stressful uncertainty of climbing through the farm system to the noisy spectacle of Opening Day and the jittery somewhat awesome and nervous performance of that special rookie who had the stuff to make it to the big leagues. Then there’s the grizzled wily pitcher who can cut any batter down and leave them shame faced and tarnished as they sulk back to the dugout. Let’s not forget the tipping of the cap from the aging hero on his farewell season or that “One Last” At Bat or trip to the mound before they take their hallowed place in the quiet serenity of the marble hall in that sacred place called, Cooperstown so one day some mere mortal like me can turn to their kid and say, “That was a freakin’ awesome game.”
Today, the Cubs are 0-1. Let’s forget about expectations or waiting on prospects to come up. These are the 2014 Chicago Cubs. They face the Pirates tonight and Edwin Jackson will lead his troops against Pittsburgh. We know that last year was one Edwin’s going to forget.
“Last year was a crazy year and it wasn’t a year I wanted to have,” Edwin Jackson said. “I’m going to go out and play the way I know I can play. I haven’t lost any confidence — I never lost any confidence last year. It was a tough season, but at the end of the day, I came in the clubhouse the same person, day in and day out. I’m ready to go out and show what I can do.”
The Cubs are competing for first place in the National League Central. I know they’re a much better team then people give them credit for. Last game Emilio Bonifacio was that hero. He’ll be scoring a lot more runs for the Cubs this year.
Will this be the Edwin Jackson that threw only fastballs in a spring game or will it be the Edwin Jackson that the Cubs signed to lead the roster?
The Cubs have weapons in Starlin Castro, Mike Olt, Anthony Rizzo and Bonifacio. You get the point. I think that the Cubs will compete if they overcome that vicious lack of RISP that dogged them last year.
Baseball. It’s a beautiful game.
